Organic phosphorus materials such as phosphates, phosphonates and phosphites are being used as additives in the formulation of lubricants such as anti-wear additives, extreme pressure additives, stabilizers, metal passivators and antioxidants. The zinc di alkyl dithio phosphates are most widely used in the automotive engine lubricants.


Compounds formed by the replacement of hydrogen atoms of an acid by the hydrocarbon radical of ethyl are known as phosphate ester. Phosphate ester falls under the special class of anionic surface active agents. Phosphate ester are widely preferred over other ester based fluids owing to their superior performance and the safety advantages over other products. Phosphate esters are widely used as lubricants among other industrial uses because of their superior thermal stability and good lubrication characteristics. These properties of phosphate ester are major driving factor for its increased usage in lubricants, fire retardants and hydraulic systems.
